Itinerary
Day 01 Flight to Paro
We can fly to Paro from Kathmandu, Delhi, Kolkatta and Bangkok. The flight offers us spectacular views of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and other famous Himalayan peaks, including the sacred Mount Chomolhari and Jichu Drake in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro International Airport, we will be met and transferred to our hotel. After lunch in the hotel, we visit the National Museum (Ta-Dzong), located on the top of a hill above the Paro Dzong overlooking Paro valley and the river, Paro Rinchen Pong Dzong-the Administrative seat of the district of Paro. Overnight in Ugyen Phendyeling Resort or similar A class property.
Day 02 Drive to Thimphu with a side trip of Cheli-la and Haa Valley.
Today, we drive to Thimphu with side trip of Cheli-la pass and Haa Valley-a pristine areas visited by very few travelers. We leave the main Paro-Thimphu highway at Bondey (3 miles from Paro) and head towards Cheli-la (35km/22 miles). The pass at 3810m (12, 497 ft.) from sea level offers beautiful panoramic views of the snowcapped mountains include Mount Jhomolhari and serene Haa Valley down the hill. We descend and drive 26km/17 miles to arrive at the valley floor of Haa. We explore the pristine areas of Haa Valley, hike the hamlets and visit the ancient monasteries. Haa valley, surrounded by forested hilly slopes has checkered fields of millet, barley and potato and beautiful farmhouses with intricately colored wooden cornices and ornately carved windows. We take different route for the return trip and join the main highway at Chuzom which is about 78 km (49 miles) from Haa. From Chuzom, it’s less than an hour drive to Thimphu. We check in our hotel and take rest for the day. Overnight hotel in Thimphu.
Day 03 Visit highlights of Thimphu
In the morning, we visit the Memorial Chorten (a huge stupa) built in memory of the third King of Bhutan, the National Library where ancient manuscripts are preserved, the Painting School where traditional art is still kept alive through instructions in the art of painting Thankas (sacred Buddhist scrolls) and the Handicrafts Emporium where Bhutanese textiles and other arts and crafts are displayed and can be purchased.
After lunch in the hotel, we visit Simtokha Dzong- one of the oldest fortresses in Bhutan that houses the largest monastic schools in the country. We also visit the Tashichho Dzong - the main Secretariat Building, containing the Ministries and office of the King and Pangri Zampa Monastery-which was the residence of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel when he arrived in Bhutan in 1616 A.D. Evening reception by our tour operator with cultural entertainment. Overnight in Jhumolhari or similar A class property.
Day 04 Drive from Thimphu to Punakha and Wangduephodrang (77 km)
After an early breakfast, drive to Punakha and Wangdue. Stop at Dochu La pass (3140m) and enjoy a hot cup of tea or coffee with spectacular views of the Eastern Himalayan mountain ranges. Day 05 Phobjika Valley excursion (4 hrs round trip)
After breakfast, we leave hotel for excursion of isolated Phobjika Valley. The valley is more wide and open than many of the other valleys in Bhutan. It is a glacial valley on the edge of the Black Mountains National Park. During the winter it is home to the endangered black necked cranes which migrate here to escape the extreme cold of Tibet. We explore the villages of the valleys, pay visit to the sacred Gangtey Monastery, take chance to see some Black Necked cranes and return drive to our hotel in Punakha. Day 06 Retrace drive to Paro (4 hrs)After breakfast, we bid farewell to Punakha and Wagdue Valley and retrace drive across Dhochula pass. We may stop to visit the old Simtokha Dzong (if we missed it the previous day) just before Thimphu and continue onto Paro.
Day 07 Hike Takstang Monastery (4 hrs)
Unless you have any physical constraint or you are not so keen on hiking, we highly recommend this trip. The monastery is perched on a rocky ledge with a sheer drop of nearly 900m and overlooks the Paro Valley and river. It is believed during the second half of the 8th century Guru Padma Sambhava known as the second Buddha in Bhutan, meditated at the spot where the monastery is situated having alighted there on the back of a flying tigress. The round trip hike takes about 4 hrs. Before we return to the hotel, we drive little away from Paro to visit Drugyal Dzong that exits in ruins now. The historical Drugyal Dzong offers views of Mount Chomolhari on a clear weather day. On the way back, we will visit a typical Bhutanese farm house. Trip Difficulty Level, Road and Transport
This is basically motor vehicle based doable by all travelers with regular health condition. We attain the highest altitude at Dhochu La Pass, (10,000ft/3,048m) where we stop briefly and our over night stays are all in lower elevations where we do not have any altitude issues. The trip requires some soft walking and easy hikes but they can be skipped if we are not keen on. Bhutan roads are cut into steep hillsides and mountains and often follow the rivers. The roads are narrow, winding with switch backs and bumpy as not all parts are paved. We use Japanese made Sedan Cars, micro buses and Minibuses depending on group size. On additional payment, we can also provide SUVs.
Accommodations
For the most part of the trip, unless we have chosen other alternatives, we will be staying in moderate to the best available accommodations which are in general small hotel with room numbers ranging 10-20. No rooms may be similar to another and so there may be disparity in the rooms. You may get a better room than others or vice versa. We do not expect our hotel to have a gift shop for "sundry" items. Remember, outside Thimphu and Paro, “best available" may be very basic. In certain areas there may or may not be hot water (or any water, for that matter). We have to be prepared to adjust our normal routine and mentally be OK with things that may not work or be available when we want them to. During festival period, there will be huge demand of accommodations and suggested hotels may be already booked up and we may have to adjust you in alternative hotels and your cooperation in this matter is very much important.
Major Cities like Paro and Thimphu have a couple of international chain resorts with remarkably high price but our trips do not feature them, unless you want those hotels on additional charges.
Meals
Bhutan trip features 3 meals a day and we expect to eat most meals at our hotel, usually served in buffet that includes rice, vegetables, noodles etc. Our guide can arrange some dinner at local restaurants but beware: traditional Bhutanese food always features chilies and the most popular dish is ema datse made with large, green hot chilies in a cheese sauce.
Guides
Our guides are college educated locals, proficient in English and trained and licensed by local tourism authorities. Most importantly they are friendly and committed to deliver the best services.
International and internal airfares:
You will book your international airfare on your own and provide us your flight information. We can also help you find good fares through our air ticket consolidator on your request. We will take care of internal airfares-flight from Bangkok into Paro or on the return from Kathmandu back to Bangkok. If your trip starts from Delhi or Kathmandu, we can book your internal airfare accordingly. All internal airfares are booked locally. Local airport taxes may or may not included in the fare.
Passport and Visa
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months at the time of travel and there should be enough blank pages for entry and exit seals. Bhutan visa is pre-processed by us and we will get approval letter for you before your flight into Bhutan. Your passport gets actual visa seal upon arrival at Paro airport. If your travel starts from India, you should obtain Indian visa beforehand as India does not grant visa on arrival.
Best time for this trip:
This trip can be undertaken throughout the year but definitely October and November are the best months when temperatures are mild, skies are clear and we have clear visibility. The second best season is from March through early May.
