We will have a relaxed morning to enjoy breakfast with stunning views of Mount Amadablam (6856m/ 22493 ft) that looms to the south. Along with Lhotse (8,501m/27, 890 ft) stand proudly the Lobuche West and Lobuche East peak. Looking down from the ridge top, we will enjoy a sweeping view of Imja River Valley and the picturesque fields and the pastures of Dingboche Village.

Day 08 Trekking from Dingboche to Dugla (3-4 hrs, 4,600 m/15,090 ft).
Today, the Everest Base Camp trail climbs through Khumbu Khola Valley to Duglha with awesome views of mountains on all sides. As we approach Dusa- a yak herder's place, the valley begins to narrow. We will see a beautiful glacier lake-Chola Lake above Phulung Karpo. The superb Mount Pumori (7,138 m/ 23,418 ft) comes into view as we continue on the trail.
Now the trail descends and curves and Mount Pumori vanishes from the scene. We cross the roaring stream on a small wooden bridge and the trail ascends to Dugla from where we can view the tip of Nuptse as well as Cholatse, Thamserku, and several other majestic peaks. Although it's a short day today, we recommend stay in Dugla for acclimatization reason.

Day 09 Trekking from Dughla to Lobuche(2-4 hrs, 4940 m/16,207 ft)
Beyond Dughla, the trail climbs up the steep terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. The trail goes through the boulder-strewn slope as we ascend Chupki Lhara, a spine-chilling ridge top with dramatic views of the mountains. At the top of the ridge, we will see cairns with prayer flags which are a memorial to Scott Fischer-an American Mountaineer and Babu Chiri Sherpa-a Nepali mountain guide and 10 times Everest summiter who perished on a mission to climb Everest.
The trail then drops to the Khumbu Glacier moraine and we find ourselves right "in front of" several great peaks - Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori and Mahalangur Himal. It takes about 2 hrs to reach Louche -also spelled as Lobuje. We are now very close to the Mount Everest but it still remains hidden. As we cross the Khumbu Glacier, we will see Nuptse towering to the right.

Day 10 Trekking from Lobuche to Gorakshep ( 2hrs, 5170 m/16,961ft) to Everest Base Camp (3 hrs, 5364 m/17,594 ft) and back to Gorakshep (2 hrs trekking).
Gorakhshep has a strategic position in the Everest Base Camp trekking as its in the junction of the trail to the Kalapattar and the base camp. The trail from Lobuche to Gorakshep goes through the moraine of the Khumbu. We pass through the pyramid sign post and continue ahead on the trail; we see the crest of north ridge of Mount Everest along with Mount Pumori, Mahalangur, Lingtern, Khumbutse, Nuptse, and other splendid peaks. A small climb would lead us to Thangma Riju from where we enjoy 360 degree vista of snowy mountains.
The trail, then climbs steeply up to the top through the torrent of Changri glacier and we catch our first glimpse of Kala Patthar (5545 m/18,192 ft), a grayish green hill beneath the Mount Pumori. As we arrive at Gorakshep (2 hours) we will be overwhelmed by the snow-capped mountains including the top of the world - Mount Everest surrounding us.
We take our lunch in Gorakshep and we further continue through the Gorakshep Lake to Everest Base Camp. The hike is pretty easy, first along a ridge and then later going onto the Khumbu Glacier and takes about 3 hours. If you are trekking during spring, you will see the entire base camp ground covered by mountaineer’s tents. From the Everest Base Camp, we will have great views of Nuptse, Khumbuste and Pumori but Mount Everest! By now, we have attained our ultimate goal of the trip and we head back to Gorakshep for a good night's rest.
The return trip to Gorakshep takes about 2 hours. Time permitting and if weather is fine, it's worth hiking to Kalapattar today rather than next day to enjoy the amazing sunset view. The reflection of setting sun’s rays from the snow capped mountains creates very emotional and overwhelming scenery that trekkers shouldn’t miss.

Day 11 Hike from Gorakshep to Kala Pattar (5545 m/18,192 ft) and descend to Pheriche (4280 m/14,070 ft)-Total Trekking 7-8 hrs.
Although Everest Base Camp is the main goal of this trekking, Kala Pattar is the climax of the trip. Kala Pattar offers the most spectacular views of Mount Everest and quite different than from any other points.
We have to begin early morning so that we reach the summit before sunrise. Be prepared to walk in the dark and very cold temperature, ranging from -10°C (14°F) to -14 °C (7°F). Moreover, usually there will be chilly winds which are quite expected. It takes about 2 ½ to 3 hours to reach the top, and 1 hour return trip down to Gorakshep. We cross the beach and follow the path - steep at first and then more gentle. The final portion of the trail is very steep. On the trail, we can pause on several outstanding points to catch our breath and captures the beautiful scenery on the camera. The summit is marked by cairns and loads of prayer flags offered by the trekkers. As the first light of the day shines on Mount Everest and other peaks, we will have overwhelmingly beautiful views of Mount Everest and Nuptse to the east are magnificent, at much closer range than at Gokyo Ri. We can see Everest Base Camp in the distance on the Khumbu Glacier. For many trekkers, Kalapattar ascent is the lifetime achievement.
Depending on weather, we might spend 1 to 2 hrs on the top enjoying the sceneries and taking the pictures. After having late morning breakfast in Kala Pattar, we head down to Pheriche for overnight. We return the way we come from. It takes about 1 ½ hrs to reach to Lobuje, half an hour from Lobuje to Dughla and another 1 hour to Pheriche.
Accommodation in the guesthouse.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 12 Descend from Pheriche to Tengboche (3860 m/12,660 ft): 3-4 hours.
Relatively, it’s a shorter and easier day of trekking today, as we trek down to the lower altitudes. We follow the same route back to the terminal moraines at Dughla and follow the wide valley of Khumbu Khola River. The trail passes through the picturesque Sherpa villages of Pheriche, Orsho, and Shomare brings us to Pangboche in about 2 hours. If you didn't visit the monastery at on the way up and plant to visit now, then we take the alternative route from Shomare.
From Pangboche, we continue down to Imaja Khola and cross the bridge and walk through the forest to Debuche where we can visit a nunnery, a Nyingma-pa institution (3 hrs). Tengboche Monastery is further 30 minutes descent from Debuche. Finally, we reach Tengboche Monaster, elegantly situated on a ridge in the forest with splendid views of mighty Everest and Ama Dablam. It's probably the best location on the whole trip!! Tengboche hosts a famous festival known as Mani Rimbu during the month of November.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 13 Continue descending from Tengboche to Namche Bazaar: (3440 m/11,280 ft): 5-6 hour trek
This section of the trail is well defined. We walk past the large stupa to the south of Tengboche and walk down the steep path, lined with juniper and rhododendron trees. If we are trekking during spring, pink and red rhododendron flowers ablaze our surroundings. After crossing the prayer flag festooned bridge over the Dudkoshi River, we reach Phunki Thenga by the Dudh Kosi River. The trail follows the river gorge descending rapidly through the pine forests. The path eventually reaches Sansa –a major trail junction in the region.
We stop at Kyangjuma (3570 m/11,710 ft) and enjoy lunch in relaxed atmosphere with gorgeous views of Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Nuptese in every bite. After lunch, we follow the trail that clings to the steep wooded slope beyond Kyangjuma and zigzags down to Namche Bazaar. The trail is abundant with several wildlife such as mountain goats, snow leopards, colorful pheasants, etc and we will be on the lookout for them. We walk past a Chorten and arrive at army camp of Namche Bazaar, from where, we bid farewell to Lhotse, Mount Everest and Tengboche. Upon arrival at Namche Bazaar, we settle into our guesthouse.

Day 14 Descend from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft) (2,652m/8,700ft) (6-7 hrs)
The last day of trekking of the Everest Base Camp trip!Namche Bazaar to Lukla is a long way down but by now we are very much accustomed to such trail. We just walk slowly and have control on our shaky legs battling against the rocky terrain.
The trail crosses several bridges over the fast following Dudh Koshi and its tributaries the trail comes in level. Although we are travelling the same route down, we find out completely different views. It takes about 3 ½ hours to reach Phakding where we may stop for refreshment. It takes another 2 to 3 hours to reach Lukla. We will have time in Lukla to stretch those sore legs, and recall the experiences of the last two weeks. We will also reconfirm our flight ticket today.

Everest Base Camp is a strenuous trekking
A prior high altitude trekking experience will be an advantage but not a requirement. Everest Base Camp Trekking involves very high altitude and so a serious planning and training is very much recommended. Most of the pvernight stops are at the elevations of 3500m (11, 480ft) or higher and we have at least 6 nights at the altitude of 4000m (13, 120 ft) or higher. We attain the highest altitude of 5416m/17769ft on the top of Kalapattar and our highest camp will be at Gorakshep at 5170 m/16,961ft. Everyone will experience some degree of altitude sickness when we reach at the elevation of 3000 m (9,840 ft) or higher but our itinerary is planned for a gradual gain of altitude and allows proper acclimatization. You are recommended to begin preparation several months ahead of the trip. We advise you to do some jogging, cycling, swimming or aerobics that helps build stamina in your body as well as increases your confidence level and of course minimizes the chances of getting acute mountain sickness. We have to avoid dehydrating and so we advise you to consume 3-4 litres of water daily and also liquid food in meals. Not sure if it has any medical grounds, but our Sherpa guides recommends garlic soup to treat the effects of the altitude. If you have any heart, lungs or blood diseases, please, do consult with your physician before you sign up for this trip.
Besides the altitude, we have to be prepared for the harsh weather on the Everest Base Camp trip. While days are warm and sunny, temperatures during the morning, evening and nights can be very cold often below freezing point. We need protection against the strong ultraviolet rays as well as dry winds.
Everest Base Camp trekking trail offers guesthouse accommodations with basic facilities with exception to some western standard hotels. We chose the best of the available accommodations. Forget about the heating system of the western and developed countries. During the peak season, the guesthouses can be cramped with trekkers and you have to be ready to sleep anywhere- in the dining room or kitchen! A hot shower will be a luxury and if it exits, we have to pay extra. Normally, we don’t dare to take our cloths off, due to cold. Food and water quality will be low and its recommended to pack vitamin supplement, dry foods, energy bars etc on your own to maintain your calorie requirement.
Lodge accommodation
Using lodge accommodation available along the trekking route makes the Everest Base Camp trip relatively easier and cheaper than the massive camping arrangement. The lodges, popularly known as tea-houses provide dorm style rooms with futon or foam mattress and quilt or blankets. You will you use share toilet which is usually squat style. Hot shower, if exists in the lodge is a luxury and is not included in the room rent. You may expect to pay $4-5 for a bucket of hot water. Some places do have upmarket luxury lodges but in order to maintain consistency in the facilities through the trip, we chose to stay in regular Sherpa family run lodges. Staying in small guesthouses gives opportunity to meet the locals and fellow international trekkers like you.Meals during trekking.
Our Everest Base Camp trekking cost includes standard breakfast, lunch and three course dinners, followed by tea or coffee. Meals are cooked by the family of the lodge owner. Although the food is usually plentiful and delicious, you should be aware that the menu is not normally extensive. Most teahouses offer a variety of rice and noodle dishes, as well as soup and seasonal vegetables. A variety of cereals, bread and egg dishes are generally available for breakfast. There will also be plenty of snacks available such as biscuits, chocolate and soft drinks (extra cost) and in some areas you will find fresh fruit in season. You can buy packaged water (bottled mineral water) from local lodge and shop en route or you can also ask your guide to fill up your water bottle with boiled water and treat with water purification pills. Some lodges charge extra for filling up bottle for the cost of boiling the water.
Guide and support staff.
On our Everest Base Camp trekking, you will have local English speaking certified Guide, accompanying you as from Kathmandu. All Highland Asia Guides are trained by KEEP (Kathmandu Environmental Education Project) on first aid, environment, conservation and biodiversity. As required by law, all our trekking guides are licensed by Tourism Department’s academy. Most importantly, they are professional, helpful and always willing to provide you with personalized care and services.
Your guide escorts you along the trail, selects the lodge for accommodation and help you choosing your meal and deals with local bureaucracy whenever required. As you pay all trekking charges in advance, the guide will take care of the bills. We provide one porter for each two trekkers and he carries 15 kg/33 lb. Porters are locally hired at the village where your trek begins from, if not hired from Kathmandu. The guide and porters will have good clothing and boots to survive the harsh weather of the mountains.
A typical day on Everest Base Camp Trekking
Each morning after packing our bags and having a good breakfast, we set off on the day's walk. All we need to carry is a small day pack containing water bottle, camera, sun cream, hat, rain jacket and warm jumper, just in case. The porters will carry the rest of our gear for us.
After walking for 3-4 hours we stop for lunch at around midday. The afternoon's walk is generally shorter and we usually arrive at our destination in time for afternoon tea. The remainder of the afternoon can be spent exploring the village, doing a bit of washing or simply relaxing with a good book. On some days we will arrive at our destination by lunchtime and the entire afternoon will be free.
After dinner, the evening will often be spent playing cards and reliving the day's adventures, before heading off to bed for a well-earned sleep.
The best season for Everest Base Camp Trekking
Autumn ( Mid Sep-Mid Nov).
This is the best season for trekking in the Everest Base Camp because of the best visibility, the freshest air and perhaps the clearest skies. The weather is excellent and the mountain views are tantalizing. Hind side, this is also the busiest tourist season in Nepal. That means hotels and lodges are full and transport and good guides are booked. If you plan to travel during the fall, please place your reservation well ahead of time, at least 4-5 months before your travel date.
Spring ( March-May).
This is the second preferred trekking season. The weather is still pleasant. Rhododendrons and wild flowers will be in blossom but mountain views may not be as great as in the fall time.
Summer ( Mid June-Mid September)
Not a good time to travel to the Everest Base Camp. Mountains are often time covered with the clouds and you may need to wait several days to get glimpse of the Himalayas. The trail will be slippery with abundant leeches, streams will be in their highest level and trails can be covered with mud slides or even washed down by the avalanches.
Winter ( Mid Nov-Feb)
Unless you are an experienced trekker, avoid trekking during Winter as well. There can be heavy snow fall in the higher elevation and of course, it will be extremely cold.

While we plan and do our best to make your trip smooth and seamless, there may be chances of unforeseen events and conditions such as illness, accident, inclement weather, and flight cancellation or missed connection or loss of baggage etc. that may cause interruption or delay or total cancellation of your trip putting your hard earned travel investment in jeopardy. It’s also possible that you may need medical assistance, emergency evacuation or medical transportation when you get ill or involve in an accident when you are traveling in remote areas. Highland Asia’s Tour cost does not cover any of these expenses or losses and so we strongly recommend you that you should protect yourself and your travel investment against those unfavorable conditions.
