Chinese visa and permits:
Passport should be valid 6 months or more at the time of travel to China/Tibet. You should apply Chinese visa in your home country and for some good reason, please, DO NOT disclose your Tibet intention otherwise visa procedure becomes tedious and complicated. Once you have Chinese visa done, we need a copy it and we will take care of rest of things. Passport and Chinese visa copy should reach us minimum a month before your travel date. Chinese visa is usually valid for 90 days from the date of issue and so you want to make sure that your visa is not already expired by your departure date.
We will provide you a copy of permits by fax or e-mail about 7-10 days ahead of your travel date or you can collect it from our contact person in Chengdu. Your Guide will be holding all other necessary permits required for this trip.
Trip Difficulty Level:
This is basically motor vehicle based tour with some optional hikes. When we are driving from one city to another, we drive 3-5 hours. We usually start the day around 830 am or 9 am after breakfast; we will have stops as required for drinks, nature call or photography and we will have lunch break early afternoon and we should reach hotel in the mid afternoon. Temples and monasteries are usually situated atop a higher elevation and require climbing a flight of stairs or on an even surface. Roads in this trip are in fairly good conditions but nothing can be taken for granted. Construction projects come and go, new pavement is laid and old pavement gets damaged. Road conditions keep changing all the time. So, we have to be flexible, an open minded and be prepared to expect the unexpected when you are traveling in Tibet where facilities are still underway. July and August are rainy months and chances of landslide or snowfall cannot be ruled out. We use good condition 4WD Land cruisers but at times, tires can go flat or mechanical break downs can occur. Tibetan drivers are skilled to fix them and all we need is your cooperation during this difficult time.
Accommodation and meals:
We use 4-5 star categories of hotels in most of the cities of Yunan, where choices are available and the top end hotel in Tsedang, Gyantse and Shigatse, which are 3 star standard hotels. In Lhasa, we use mid range hotels with Tibetan architecture in Barkhor area. You will have rooms with private bathrooms, with hot and cold water. Electric outage is common in Tibet and at times, hot water supply may be disrupted. Please, do not count much on toiletry supplies in Tibetan hotels and do not expect hair dryer or iron and ironing boards. Room rent includes breakfast. Your hotels will have restaurants or you can go out for lunch or dinner. Restaurants cater Chinese, Tibetan and also western dishes and you can expect to spend $8-10 per meal in a regular restaurant. When we are driving, food or drink stops may not be possible for hours and if we get stranded on the way for road blockade or mechanical breakdowns, we do not want to be starving. So, we should bring dry foods like energy bars, chocolates, coffee, supplement vitamins etc to maintain calorie level in our body.
Transportation:
All tours and transportation will be by private 4WD Land cruiser, driven by experience Tibetan driver. We put maximum 4 travelers in one vehicle. Vehicles carry extra tires and repair tools. Driver may speak little or no English but they know the Tibetan roadways.
Health Issues
There is no mandatory vaccination required to travel to Tibet but you may consider vaccination against rabies and Hep A. Travelers with cardiac-pulmonary issues or any other medical conditions are recommended to consult their physician. The main health consideration in Tibet is altitude related illness or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). You may experience some mild symptoms initially at the altitude of 3000m( 9840ft) or higher, such as headache, lethargy, nausea and sleeplessness, but these should lessen within a few days. A supply of bottled oxygen is carried in the vehicle at all times should it be required. Hotels in Lhasa are equipped with oxygen.
You should start some physical exercises like jogging, swimming, cycling, hiking and aerobics about several weeks ahead of the trip that keeps you fit and lessens the chance of getting altitude sickness. You should have a good sleep the night before you fly in to Lhasa and take complete rest on the first day. Its also advisable to drink 3-4 liters of water daily and consume liquid food.
Clothing
During the day a light shirt or jumper and lightweight pants will be suitable, but a warm fleece or sweater is recommended for the evenings and mornings. Night temperatures can fall below freezing point even in summer.
* Warm fleece top
* Thermal underwear (top and bottom)
* Cotton shirts (short and long sleeved)
